HC Deb 04 March 1986 vol 93 c123W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what arrangements exist for collaboration between doctors, chaplains and other appropriate hospital staff in approaching next-of-kin or near relatives of recently dead patients for permission to remove suitable organs in order to preserve life in another person; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitney

Arrangements for collaboration between hospital staff in approaching relatives for permission to remove organs from cadavers for the purposes of transplantation are a matter for the staff concerned, in accordance with health authority policy. The Department actively encourages such collaboration, and the Chief Medical Officer wrote last year to the directors of all transplant units enclosing examples of good practice.
