HC Deb 27 June 1986 vol 100 cc331-2W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish all the information from the recent routine monitoring of sheep thyroids in Caithness carried out by the isotopes section of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food central laboratory in Weybridge; what are the comparable figures for similar periods in previous years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ancram

As part of the routine surveillance in condition with the Dounreay nuclear establishment, samples of the thyroid glands of sheep slaughtered at Thurso are analysed at the central veterinary laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Results for recent years were included in a report submitted by Her Majesty's Industrial Pollution Inspectorate as part of its evidence to the public local inquiry into the proposal to locate the European demonstration fast reactor reprocessing plant at Dounreay. That report was entitled: "Environmental monitoring for radioactivity around Dounreay Nuclear Power Development Establishment, 1981–1985; HMIPI Production No. 3, 1986". I am arranging for a copy of the report to be placed in the Library.
