§ Mr. Stephen Rossasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what support he is giving to the probation service in its efforts to devise a national scheme whereby, with the assistance of Manpower Services Commission funding, the long-term unemployed can be invited to assist in the supervision and instruction of those undergoing community service under court orders.
§ Mr. MellorI am not aware of any proposals for a national scheme. I understand that the Hampshire probation service has put forward proposals for a scheme on the Isle of Wight, and is consulting the county council about them.
