HC Deb 25 June 1986 vol 100 c172W
Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much has been spent in each area under the assisted area scheme in each of the last three years (a) on capital account and (b) on revenue account; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The following grant payments were made under the regional selective assistance and old and new-style regional development grant (RDG) schemes in the last three years.

£ million
Region-Country 1983–84 1984–85 1985–86
North-East 82.6 76.1 61.7
North-West 130.7 121.1 95.4
Yorkshire and Humberside 32.3 36.0 30.7
East Midlands 16.9 10.2 8.3
West Midlands 1.8 6.6
South West 9.8 11.3 10.6
Scotland 166.2 138.4 149.1
Wales 87.3 111.0 106.2

Revenue expenditure is not eligible for grant under the RDG schemes although payments of new-style RDGs may be related to the number of jobs created. It is not possible to provide a breakdown of payments of regional selective assistance in the form requested, but the bulk is related to capital expenditure. The Secretaries of State for Scotland and Wales are responsible for the administration of these schemes in their respective territories.
