HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 c36W
Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many of the applications for parole in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985, respectively, the fact that the prisoner had no suitable accommodation to go into on release was a factor in the application being refused

Mr. Mellor

This information is not available. Parole is not granted in the absence of a suitable release plan. In some cases where release on parole is made conditional on suitable accommodation being found for a prisoner, it proves impossible to make satisfactory arrangements in time for release on parole. But this is very rare.

Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what increase the Government propose to make in the resources of the Parole Board in light of concern expressed by the Parole Board in its annual report for 1985.

Mr. Mellor

Every effort is being made to find the extra resources required to cope with the increase in the parole caseload. Resources in the Home Office parole unit have already been increased and further increases are due to take place in the near future.
