HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 c47W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Energy, pursuant to his reply, Official Report, 1 May, column 460, to the hon. Member for Merionnydd Nant Conwy if he will list the reactors of origin from which nuclear material has been withdrawn from safeguards since 1978.

Mr. Goodlad

[pursuant to his reply, 21 May 1986, c. 206]: All the material withdrawn from safeguards for defence purposes originated from the Chapelcross or Calder Hall reactors.

On a number of occasions small quantities of material, measured in grammes, have been temporarily withdrawn from safeguards by the AEA for experimental testing in unsafeguarded facilities. These tests were for civil purposes and the withdrawal of the material from safeguards and its subsequent return was a technicality necessary only because appropriate safeguarding facilities were not available. The material involved originated in either Chapelcross, Calder Hall or in generating board reactors.
