Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the numbers of soldiers killed in Northern Ireland by regiment in each year since 1968.

Mr. Freeman

I will answer shortly.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the numbers of soldiers wounded in Northern Ireland by regiment in each year since 1968.

Mr. Freeman

Between August 1969, when troops were deployed on duties in support of the civil power, and 19 June 1986, 4,099 soldiers were wounded. Information by regiment is not readily available and could be provided only with disproportionate cost.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what proportion of soldiers in Northern' Ireland are of West Indian, African, Asian or other minority groups in the United Kingdom;

(2) what proportion of soldiers killed in Northern Ireland were of West Indian, African, Asian or other ethnic minority groups annually since 1969;

(3) what proportion of soldiers wounded in Northern Ireland are of West Indian, Indian, African, Asian and other ethnic minority groups.

Mr. Freeman

No records are maintained of the ethnic origins of members of the armed forces.
