Mr. Chope

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a further statement on the progress made by health authorities on competitive tendering in the fields of catering, cleaning and laundry and give details in each case as to whether contracts have been awarded in-house or to outside contractors.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will publish in the Official Report details of the progress made by district health authorities in putting their services out to tender in the manner of the answer given on 14 April, Official Report, columns 273–80

(2) if he will name for each tendering exercise of which his Department is aware and which was completed since his answer of 14 April, Official Report, columns 279–86, the health authority, the hospital concerned and the successful tenderer.

Mr. Fowler

[pursuant to his reply, 16 June 1986, c. 447]: The policy of competitive tendering is producing increasing benefits for the Health Service. The resources that are released are available for health authorities to spend on improvements in services to patients. Savings have built up steadily. At the end of 1984 they amounted to £9 million a year. At the end of 1985 they had risen to £42 million a year. In the first quarter of 1986 alone further savings of some £10 million a year have been identified. It is now estimated that a total of £52 million a year will be saved through competitive tendering exercises completed by 31 March 1986.
