HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 c42W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why the average cost per person on the staff of the European Economic Commission has risen from 28,500 European currency units in 1976 to 64,240 European currency units in 1986.

Mrs. Chalker

This increase of 124.9 per cent. in Commission staff costs results mainly from inflation, including wage increases. Wages in EC member states rose by an average of 158.3 per cent. over the same period.
