Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what proportion of the equity in the privatised British Gas will be allocated to those who are employed in the industry; and how this will be allocated among the work force.

Mr. Peter Walker

I announced an attractive package of share offers for past and present employees of British Gas in the reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Exeter (Mr. Hannam) on 18 June at columns537–39. The proportion of shares allocated to employees will, of course, depend on the applications which are received from them.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) when he proposes to announce the terms of the flotation of British Gas plc;

(2) what sum will be allocated to the privatised British Gas as a debt to public funds.
