HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 c30W
Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the inquiry presently being conducted into the case of the six men convicted of the Birmingham pub bombings is considering how they carne by the injuries inflicted upon Them during their first week in custody.

Mr. Mellor

My right hon. Friend's present examination of the case includes consideration of documents presented in support of allegations made by the six men at their trial that they were assaulted while in police custody. In 1976 a number of prison officers were acquitted of charges of assaulting the six men, but the Department accepted that they sustained injury while in prison.
