asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what account was taken, in arriving at the new formula for community funding through the University Grants Committee, of the additional costs borne by universities in the north-east for (a) heating and (b) travel to London.

As to (c), the average relevant income of families using the assisted places scheme was £7,338 per annum in 1985–86. On (d), the normal age of entry to the scheme will normally be at 11 or 13, but will vary from school to school. Some assisted places are also available for direct entry into the sixth form.
