asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement about his Department's small firms merit award for research and technology scheme for small firms.

Mr. Pattie

The purpose of the small firms merit award for science and technology, which I announced on 30 April, is to support particularly promising and innovative technological projects from small firms and individuals.

I hope that it will prove to be effective as a source of seed corn finance to help realise the considerable potential of our innovators.
