§ 12. Mr. Andrew F. Bennettasked the Secretary of State for Defence what is his latest estimate of the number of jobs that will be created by the Trident programme in Scotland.
§ Mr. YoungerThe Ministry of Defence employs some 4,500 civilians at Rosyth, Coulport and Faslane in support of strategic systems. Cancellation of the Trident project would put these jobs at risk. During the peak years of the Trident programme over 2,000 construction jobs will be created on the Clyde; and equipment purchases for Trident will create around 25,000 direct and indirect job opportunities in the United Kingdom as a whole, of which Scotland will take a share.
