HC Deb 16 June 1986 vol 99 c381W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of secondary schools in the United Kingdom are grammar schools; and how this compares with 1979, 1970 and 1960.

Mr. Dunn

Grammar schools represented 3.9 per cent. of maintained secondary schools in England in January 1985. This compares with 5.4, 19.3 and 21.3 per cent. in 1979, 1970 and 1960 respectively. Statistics for schools in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are the responsibility of the Secretaries of State for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
