HC Deb 16 June 1986 vol 99 c410W
Mr. Bellingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the total cost of financial assistance to relatives from elsewhere in the United Kingdom visiting prisoners in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Mellor

It would not be possible except at disproportionate cost to disaggregate expenditure on assisted visits by reference to the destination of visitors.

Mr. Bellingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the total cost of the financial assistance scheme for relatives visiting prisoners in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Mellor

Provisional outturn for 1985–86 for expenditure on the assisted visits schemes is as follows:

£
England and Wales *818,283
Scotland *160,102
Northern Ireland 42,394
Total *1,020,779
*These figures include expenditure incurred by the Department of Health and Social Security in 1984–85 but not reimbursed until 1985–86.
