§ Mr. Altonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, following the recent visit to the military nuclear facility at Barnwell in South Carolina by the Minister of State, the hon. Member for Bristol, West (Mr. Waldegrave) he will publish a comparative table of the volumes of low-level nuclear waste handled at Barnwell and at Drigg, and the access available at each site for low-level nuclear waste disposal.
§ Mr. WaldegraveBritish Nuclear Fuels accepts low-level radioactive waste for disposal at Drigg from its own establishments, nuclear power stations and premises such as hospitals, universities and non-nuclear industry. The volumes of waste disposed of are published in BNFL's annual report of radioactive discharges and monitoring of the environment. In 1984, 33,149 cubic metres were deposited at the site. The Barnwell waste disposal site accepts approximately 28,000 cubic metres of low-level radioactive waste per year from sources in the South East of the United States. It is not a military site, but is operated by Chem Nuclear Systems Inc, under licences named by the state of South Carolina.
