HC Deb 16 June 1986 vol 99 c421W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if any staff of the National Radiological Protection Board are based permanently in Stornoway for the purposes of measuring radioactivity; to what extent the board employs other agencies or persons to carry out sampling work; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John MacKay

The National Radiological Protection Board has no staff based permanently at Stornoway. The board does not maintain staff or employ other agencies for the purpose solely of undertaking sampling work.

In the context of a nuclear emergency the board has the function of providing information and advice. For this purpose its role includes obtaining, collecting and interpreting measurements of several kinds from many sources so as to build up a complete picture of the distribution of radioactivity resulting from the incident and to assess its radiological consequences.
