HC Deb 16 June 1986 vol 99 cc417-8W
Ms. Richardson

asked the Paymaster General what number and proportion of the employed labour force have a length of service in employment of (a) less than two years and (b) less than five years; and what number and proportion of those employed for less than five years are part-time workers working (i) less than eight hours, (ii) less than 12 hours, (iii) less than 16 hours and (iv) less than 20 hours a week, giving the most recently available figures.

Mr. Lang

Information is not available in the exact form requested.

The regularly published employed labour force series does not identify length of service in employment or number of hours worked a week.

The labour force survey (LFS) provides information on a different basis but allows the above analyses. Preliminary LFS results for the spring of 1985 are presented in the following tables:

Table 1
Length of time in employment
Great Britain
Thousands Per cent.
All persons in employment 23,678 100.0
With same employer, or self-employed, for less than 2 years 6,737 28.5
With same employer, or self-employed, for at least 2 but least than 5 years 4,615 19.5
Table 2
Total usual number of hours worked per week
Great Britain
Thousands Per cent.
All persons with same employer, or self-employed, for less than 5 years who: 11,352 100.0
Work less than 8 hours per week 510 4.5
Work at least 8 but less than 12 hours per week 509 4.5
Work at least 12 but less than 16 hours per week 512 4.5
Work at least 16 but less than 20 hours per week 366 3.2

Mr. Deakins

asked the Paymaster General if he will give the number of unemployed claimants by ward in Walthamstow in June 1983 and in the latest month for which figures are available.

Mr. Lang

The following information is in the Library. The table shows the numbers of unemployed claimants in June 1983 and May 1986 in each ward of the Walthamstow parliamentary constituency. This comparison is affected by seasonal factors, the 1983 Budget provisions, which meant that certain older men, mainly aged 60 and over, no longer have to sign on to obtain national insurance credits or supplementary benefit, and by the change in the timing of compilation of unemployment statistics in March 1986.
