§ Mr. Dobsonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give for each health authority wholly or partly within Greater London, and for each year since 1979, the number of (a) medical staff, (b) nursing staff and (c) ancillary staff, expressing these figures both in terms of actual numbers of employees and in whole time equivalent terms; and if he will also give these figures adjusted to account for the change in the working week.
§ Mr. HayhoeI regret that I cannot give the hon. Member all the information he seeks. Information for district health authorities prior to 1982 is not comparable with the information for later years, due to the 1982 National Health Service reorganisation. Senior medical and dental staff have their contracts with regional health authorities or teaching districts only, and are not therefore allocated to individual districts. The figures in the tables show medical and dental staff at regional health authority level only.
No adjustment to the nursing and midwifery figures is necessary, since the tables do not cover the period between 1979 and 1981 when the change in working hours took place.

Notes:
* Includes bank and agency nursing staff. In 1982 bank nurses were from magnetic tape, since then they have been from manual returns.
† On 1 April 1984 Operating department assistants were classified from the Ancillary to the P & T staff group. These figures will reflect this change.
