asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will give the productivity figures, expressed in output per manshift, for the coal industry in 1979 and at the latest available date.

Mr. David Hunt

Overall deep-mined revenue output per man shift for the week ending 24 May was 3.16 tonnes. This compares with average deep-mined revenue output per man shift in the financial year 1979–80 of 2.31 tonnes.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what has been the total value of grants made by the Government to the coal industry since 1979.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the extent of Government financial support for the coal industry.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the extent of the Government's support for the coal industry in 1985–86.

The total amount of deficit grant —including operating grant—and social grant accruing to British Coal in the financial years 1979–80 to 1984–85 is £5,162 million. In addition, payments under the Redundant Mineworkers' Payments Scheme during the period total £555 million. Provisional figures for 1985–86 are as follows:
