asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give guidelines to the University Grants Committee on the conversion factor used for funding places for part-time students, with a view to encouraging the growth in the number of such students.

Mr. Walden

No. It is for the committee itself, in formulating its advice to my right hon. Friend, to consider the relativities between full-time and part-time students.

Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards the provision of part-time university education.

Mr. Walden

There has been a small but steady increase in recent years in the number of part-time students at universities. We welcome that trend and hope that it continues.
