Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will publish a list showing, for each of the last five years, the approximate expenditure by each licensee on improving safety features of Magnox nuclear power stations, identifying the licensee and the number of reactors operated; and if he will estimate what additional expenditure is likely to be made by each licensee as a result of the 20-year safety reviews.

I will ask the chairman of the Central Electricity Generating Board, the South of Scotland Electricity Board and British Nuclear Fuels plc to write to the hon. Member.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many staff are employed by British Nuclear Fuels Ltd in (a) uranium receipt and handling, (b) fuel fabrications at Springfield, (c) uranium enrichment at Capenhurst, (d)spent fuel receipt and storage, (e) decanning and solvent mixing and settling, (f) chemical reprocessing, (g) plutonium finishing and storage, (h) radioactive waste management, (i) SHEP operation at Sellafield, (j) operation of Magnox reactors at Calder Hall and Chapel Cross and (k) Risley administrative centre.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many staff are employed in nuclear and non-nuclear work, respectively at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority establishment, at Harwell, Winfrith Heath. Sellafield, Dounreay and London.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many staff are employed by the Central Electricity Generating Board and the South of Scotland Electricity Board, respectively, on nuclear specific work.

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what assessment he has made of the re-employment options and difficulties in transferring staff working on nuclear research and development in the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, Central Electricity Generating Board and South of Scotland Electricity Board and staff working in Magnox spent fuel reprocessing into the area of nuclear waste management.

None. The deployment of staff is a matter for the organisations concerned. The Government see a continuing need for work on all aspects of nuclear power, including radioactive waste management.
