HC Deb 12 June 1986 vol 99 c251W
Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions have taken place with British Airways about its proposed purchase of General Electric's 616 80 engine for Tridents and Boeings; what information he has as to the reasons for British Airways' preference for the General Electric engine; and when a decision will be reached on this question.

Mr. Michael Spicer

In considering what orders to place for Boeing 747–400s, British Airways has sought quotations from all the major aero engine manufacturers. This is their customary practice when evaluating a new aircraft type. Discussions are still continuing with the manufacturers, and it will be some time before British Airways will be in a position to submit an investment proposal for the approval of my right hon. Friend.
