§ Mr. Hoyleasked the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions have taken place with British Airways about its proposed purchase of General Electric's 616 80 engine for Tridents and Boeings; what information he has as to the reasons for British Airways' preference for the General Electric engine; and when a decision will be reached on this question.
§ Mr. Michael SpicerIn considering what orders to place for Boeing 747–400s, British Airways has sought quotations from all the major aero engine manufacturers. This is their customary practice when evaluating a new aircraft type. Discussions are still continuing with the manufacturers, and it will be some time before British Airways will be in a position to submit an investment proposal for the approval of my right hon. Friend.
