HC Deb 09 June 1986 vol 99 cc90-1W
Mr. Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the present eligibility criteria for part-time students receiving social security benefits.

Mr. Newton

An unemployed person who wishes to claim supplementary benefit while studying part-time must satisfy the following conditions: the course is for not more than 21 hours per week of supervised study and instruction; he is prepared to leave the course if work becomes available for him; he has been unemployed and in receipt of benefit for three months, and during this period his study has been limited—if 19 or under—to 12 hours per week or less, or—if over 19—to any course which is designated part-time.
