HC Deb 09 June 1986 vol 99 cc95-6W
Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what advice has been given to and by the regional health authorities and district health authorities in the light of the judgment in the Marshall case on the retirement age for women; and what action has been taken to implement this judgment in relation to the National Health Service.

Mr. Hayhoe

There is no national agreement on retirement age in the National Health Service and responsibility for retirement policies rests with individual district health authorities. Following the judgment in the Marshall case, these authorities were advised that they should cease to operate policies which forced a female employee to retire at an age earlier than a male counterpart.
