HC Deb 09 June 1986 vol 99 cc6-7W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on his admission policy for refugees from Hong Kong; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

[pursuant to his reply, 23 May 1986, c. 337]: None since October 1985 when the High Commissioner, addressing his Executive Committee, warmly welcomed the Government's response to the report of the Home Affairs Committee on Refugees and Asylum with Special Reference to the Vietnamese. He described the measures we have taken to admit further Vietnamese by relaxing the family reunion criteria as "an important new effort to help relieve the burden of Hong Kong".
