Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the impact of the Chernobyl nuclear accident on the international convention on the security of nuclear materials.

Mr. Goodlad

Her Majesty's Government continue to favour the early entry into force of the convention on the physical security of nuclear materials.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if, further to his answer of 3 June, Official Report, column 467, he will give further details of discussions between his Department and the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1986 on (a) plutonium and b) the safeguarding of nuclear material generated in the Central Electricity Generating Board's nuclear reactors, against diversion to military use; which of his Department's officials were involved; and on which dates.
