HC Deb 09 June 1986 vol 99 c1W
Mr. Leighton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department where Assistant Commissioner Wynn Jones was stationed on the night of 3 May at Wapping at 10 pm, 10.30 pm, 11 pm, 11.30 pm, midnight and 12.30 am; what are Assistant Commissioner Jones' salary and allowances; who was in command of the mounted police that night; which officers were in charge of the riot police that night; and which officer gave the instruction that the crowd was not allowed over a period of hours to leave Wellclose Street and Wellclose Square that night.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I understand that Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jones was present in the control room at Leman street police station throughout the evening of 3 May and until after 2 am on 4 May.

Chief Superintendent Goodall was the officer in overall command of mounted police and officers deployed in protective uniform that evening. The commissioner assures me that no instructions were given to prevent demonstrators leaving Wellclose street and Wellclose square. The annual salary of a Deputy Assistant Commissioner is £32,352, inclusive of London weighting and London allowance.
