HC Deb 09 June 1986 vol 99 c12W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish the cost of the Medical Research Council in each of the past four years.

Mr. Walden

The Medical Research Council receives the greater part of its income as an annual grant-in-aid from the Department's science budget. The amounts of that grant-in-aid in each of the past four years are as follows:

Financial Year £ million Cash Terms
1983–84 113.7
1984–85 117.2
1985–86 *122.3
1986–87 *128.3
* Estimated.

In addition, the MRC has a small amount of income for research commissioned by other Government Departments, international organisations and industry. Such income is approximately 5 per cent. of the grant-in-aid.
