asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many people were registered as unemployed in (a) Greenock and Port Glasgow, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Scotland as a whole in each year since 1979;

(2) how many vacancies were available in jobcentres in (a) Scotland, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Greenock and Port Glasgow in May 1979, June 1983 and at the latest date for which figures are available;

(3) what specific plans he has to reduce youth unemployment in (a) Strathclyde and (b) Greenock and Port Glasgow;

(4) what was the level of youth unemployment in the Greenock travel-to-work area at the latest date for which figures are available; and what were the comparable figures in 1979 and subsequent years;

(5) what was the level of long-term unemployment in Greenock and Port Glasgow at the latest date for which figures are available; and what were the comparable figures in 1979 and subsequent years.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the rate of redundancies per thousand employees in (a) Scotland, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Greenock and Port Glasgow.

In 1985 redundancies per thousand employees in Scotland, Strathclyde and the Greenock and Port Glasgow area were respectively 13.5, 14.5 and 47.2. The employment base used for Scotland relates to 1985, and for Strathclyde and Greenock and Port Glasgow to 1981.
