Mr. Hancock

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he has any further plans to release to local authorities empty homes owned by his Department; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

Where circumstances permit, it is MOD policy to offer houses which are likely to be vacant for periods of at least six months to local authorities on the condition that the authority undertakes to return the properties with vacant possession at the end of the term of letting.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many evictions from property owned by his Department in Fareham have been pursued following marriage break-ups or death of spouse employed by the Royal Navy in the last year.

During the year 1 June 1985 to 31 May 1986 no such evictions were pursued.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many evictions from property owned by his Department in Gosport have been pursued following marriage break-ups or death of spouse employed by the Royal Navy in the last year.

During the year 1 June 1986 to 31 May 1986 one warrant for the eviction of an estranged wife was obtained. However, eviction was not necessary as the person was rehoused by the Portsmouth city council. No evictions were pursued following the death of a spouse.

During the year 1 June 1985 to 31 May 1986 two warrants for the eviction of estranged wives were obtained. However, in both cases eviction was not necessary as the persons were rehoused by the Portsmouth city council. No evictions were pursued following the death of a spouse.

(2) how many houses owned by his Department in Gosport are occupied by non-service households;

(3) how many houses owned by his Department in Fareham are occupied by non-service households.

On 31 March, the most recent date for which details are readily available, there were 289 service-MOD houses in the Portsmouth-Fareham-Gosport area occupied by non-service households. As these three areas are treated as one for administrative reasons, only an overall answer is possible.

(2) how many houses owned by his Department are currently empty in Gosport;

(3) how many houses owned by his Department are currently empty in Fareham.

On 31 March 1986, the most recent date for which details are readily available, there were 728 service-MOD houses empty in the Portsmouth-GosportFareham area. As these three areas are treated as one for administrative reasons, only an overall answer is possible.
