HC Deb 09 June 1986 vol 99 c80W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many registrations his Department has made under the Data Protection Act, how many people are involved with implementing the legislation in his Department as a significant part of their job description; and how much he estimates it will cost to conform with the eight data protection principles.

Mr. Jopling

My Department has made 36 registrations under the Data Protection Act.

Two people are involved to a significant extent in implementing the legislation in my Department.

My officials have estimated that the total cost of conforming with the eight data protection principles will amount to £100,000. This estimate does not include the cost of the small amount of time expended by a large number of staff located throughout the Department who have provided information to the centre to facilitate the registration process. The annual cost of continuing to conform with the eight principles, after 11 November 1987, when the subject access provisions come into force, is estimated at £40,000.
