HL Deb 06 June 1986 vol 475 c1271WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware of any commercial fishery for basking sharks in the Irish Sea and Firth of Clyde; what are the catch allowances for any such fishery and for what period is the level of catch sustainable.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Lord Belstead)

There is a small commercial fishery in the summer for basking sharks in the Firth of Clyde. The current level of fishing does not warrant management measures including the introduction of a total allowable catch, but the situation is being monitored.
