§ Mr. Chapmanasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his latest estimate of the land area of Scotland covered by (a) national scenic areas, (b) conservation areas and (c) sites of special scientific interest.
§ Mr. AncramThere are 40 national scenic areas with a total area of 1,001,800 hectares. Conservation areas designated under the Town and Country Amenities Act 1974 are generally small parts of built-up areas of architectural or historic importance; there are 527 areas in this category,. There were, at 31 December 1985, 1,075 sites of special scientific interest in Scotland with a total area of 604,330 hectares.
