§ Mr. Powleyasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he has yet decided on regulations to amend the speed limits for vehicles towing trailers; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyMy right hon. Friend has today laid regulations amending the speed limits for vehicles towing trailers. These, if approved by Parliament, will come into effect within the next two months.
The main change is to increase, from 50 mph to 60 mph, the limit for cars and light vans towing trailers on dual carriageways and motorways. The limits for these vehicles towing trailers will then be 10 mph below the national road speed limits.
I am satisfied that these new limits allow for safe maximum speeds in normal conditions and that they will not have an adverse effect on road safety.
