HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 c497W
Mr. Philip Oppenheim

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many other build-ups of methane gas on the tip sites in Britain have led to explosions since 1956 similar to that which occurred at Loscoe, Derbyshire on 24 March.

Mrs. Rumbold

No central records are kept on incidents of this nature.

Mr. Phillip Oppenheim

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether his Department has carried out any research into the reasons for the tip blast at Loscoe, Derbyshire on 24 March.

Mrs. Rumbold

An official of my Department has visited the site and had discussions with those concerned. My Department and the fire research station have carried out research into the problems of landfill gas generally.

Mr. Philip Oppenheim

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether his Department has taken any steps since 1956 to deal with the aftermath of waste tip explosions similar to that at Loscoe, Derbyshire; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

Remedial action is the responsibility of the local authority. The research sponsored by my Departmemt into methane production and control in landfill sites should form a basis for any remedial work necessary.
