HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 cc517-8W
Mr. Tim Smith

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current expenditure per head of population in the Thames Valley police area; and how this compares with the national average.

Mr. Giles Shaw

"Police Statistics 1985–86 Estimates", published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, show that the estimated net expenditure of Thames Valley police per thousand population was £37,864 in the financial year 1985–86, compared with the average of £45,135 for forces outside London in England and Wales and £54,352 for all forces in England and Wales. Both these averages exclude the Merseyside police, for whom no figures are available.
