Mr. A. Cecil Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) if he will list the amount of compensation paid to individuals in respect of claims for compensation in relation to incidents since 1970 attributable to Republican terrorist groups involving trains, the railway line and railway property;

(2) if he will list, with dates, those incidents since 1970 attributable to Republican terrorist groups involving trains, the railway line and railway property on the route from Belfast to Dublin which have given rise to payments of, or claims for, compensation; and how much in monetary terms has been paid for such incidents (a) to Northern Ireland Railways and (b) to Coras lompair Eireann.

(1) The number of claims shown for 1973 to 1976 inclusive relates only to claims still in existence at the time of computerisation of records in August 1977. Information for the years 1970 to 1972 could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

(2) It is not possible to attribute responsibility for damage to particular terrorist groups or to isolate claims specifically to the Belfast-Dublin line.
