HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 cc484-5W
Mr. Robert Banks

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what estimate he has of the anticipated tonnage of sugar beet production in the United Kingdom for the current year; what were the comparable figures for each of the last five years; and what the European Economic Community quota for United Kingdom production has been over the same period.

Mr. Gummer

The information requested on production of sugar beet in the United Kingdom is as follows:

('000 tonnes)
Season* Beet Production
1985–86 7,717
1984–85 9,017
1983–84 7,494
1982–83 10,008
1981–82 7,395
1980–81 7,380
* July-June year.

The United Kingdom production quota is measured in terms of white sugar, not beet, production. For each of the above years the maximum quota was 1.144 million tonnes white sugar equivalent.
