Mr. Jacksonasked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what firms received research and development contracts from the Ministry of Defence or its research establishments in 1983–84 in total (a) over £50 million, (b) between £25 million and £50 million, (c) between £10 million and £25 million, (d) between £5 million and £10 million and (e) between £1 million and £5 million;
(2) what expenditure for research and development was allocated in 1983–84 to those companies listed in annex G of the "Statement on the Defence Estimates", Cmnd. 9430–1, which were paid (a) between £50 million and £100 million for equipment in 1983–84, (b) between £25 million and £50 million for equipment in 1983–84, (c) between £10 million and £25 million for equipment in 1983–84 and (d) between £5 million and £10 million for equipment in 1983–84.
§ Mr. FreemanAs shown in table 3.2 of Part 2 of the "Statement on the Defence Estimates 1986" (Cmnd 9763-II), which gives a comprehensive breakdown of MOD's research and development spending, the net total for extramural expenditure on research and development in 1983–84 was £1,378 million. The detailed information requested is, however, not readily available and could not be obtained without disproportionate effort.
