HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 cc416-7W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Paymaster General what has been the total number of people employed in each region of England and Wales in the printing industry in each of the last five years for which figures are available; and what percentage of the total possible work force this figure represents in each of those years.

Mr. Lang

The Department's employment statistics are analysed according to the 1980 standard industrial classification, which combines the printing industry with publishing. Estimates of the numbers of employees in employment in printing and publishing in Great Britain for September of each year from 1981 to 1985, and expressed as a percentage of the working population (employees in employment, the self-employed, Her Majesty's forces and the unemployed) are given in table 1.

Regional estimates of employees in employment in the printing and publishing industry are available only from censuses of employment. The latest available regional estimates for the industry are based on the September 1981 census of employment, and those for England and Wales are given in table 2. The figures are expressed as a percentage of the civilian working population — employees in employment, the self-employed and the unemployed—in each region.
