Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will (a) give the breakdown of expenditure by the International Atomic Energy Agency's budget as between safety, safeguards, medical research and promotional activity and (b) indicate whether any representations have been made by Her Majesty's Government since May 1979 to the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency urging that a higher proportion of its budget be allocated to safety issues.

Mr. Goodlad

The following allocations of proposed expenditure are made in the 1986 budget of the International Atomic Energy Agency:

$ million

Safeguards 33.3
Nuclear Power and Fuel Cycle 8.1
Nuclear Applications (of which Human Health accounts for £2.3 million) 14.5
