HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 c462W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the preservation of Navan Fort and access of the public thereto; and what he estimates will be the effect on the economy and employment of the prohibition of quarrying.

Mr. Needham

Navan Fort is a historic monument of primary archaeological importance which is in the ownership of the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. The preservation of the fort itself, therefore, is secure and the public has complete freedom of access.

Officials are currently in discussion with the operator of the quarry adjacent to Navan Fort about the future of the business in the light of the decision to refuse planning permission for continued quarry operations.
