HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 c471W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make an extra-statutory concession to exempt from income tax car mileage allowance paid to hon. Members in respect of travel from Westminister to their homes within a 20-mile radius of Westminister after 11 pm on days the House does not rise until that time or later.

Mr. Norman Lamont

The general rule is that tax is payable on mileage allowances paid for travel between home and work, and it would not be appropriate to introduce a special exemption for hon. Members in respect of travel between Westminister and their homes.
