asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total number of (a) persons unemployed and (b) persons employed in the Glasgow travel-to-work area in June 1979; and what are the latest available figures.

In June 1979 the total number of person registered as unemployed in the Glasgow travel-to-work area, as defined prior to the 1984 review of travel-to-work areas, was 53,980. The number of unemployed claimants in April 1986 in the current Glasgow travel-to-work area was 113,579. Information on employment for the same dates is not available; the latest estimate of the number of employees in employment, again for pre-1984 Glasgow travel-to-work area, is 479,700 in September 1981.
