Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list for each of the last 10 years for which figures are available (i) the number of cases of fraud tried on indictment, (ii) the number of defendants convicted and acquitted, both expressed numerically and as a percentage of the whole and (iii) the value of the sums involved.

Information on offences of fraud and forgery is published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, Supplementary tables (Volume 1) in table S2.1(A) and corresponding tables for earlier years, under offence classifications 51 to 61. The information is summarised in the following table. Corresponding information for 1985 is not yet available. Information on the value of the sums involved is not collected centrally.
