HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 c540W
Mr. Frank Field

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the effect of increasing long-term national insurance benefits by £5 a week for a single person and £8 for a married couple and raising child benefit by £3 a week on the numbers claiming (a) supplementary benefit, (b housing benefit and (c) family income supplement, if no corresponding adjustments were made to the eligibility levels for income tested support.

Mr. Newton

Parts(a) and (b) cannot be answered without incurring disproportionate costs. Part (c) implies minimal reductions in the numbers claiming family income supplement.
