HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 c456W
Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of Slate for Northern Ireland how many homes of Protestant families were attacked in the Ainsworth avenue district of Belfast during the weekend of 9 to 11 May; what security is provided for these families; if he is satisfied with the present arrangements for the safety of these Protestants; who attacked them; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Scott

In the early hours of 10 May a block of five houses in Ainsworth avenue was attacked. Following this incident the police made a number of arrests and their inquiries are continuing. To date (20 May) one person has been charged with riotous behaviour.

The Ainsworth avenue/Springfield road area has over many years seen a number of inter-communal assaults and disturbances. It has therefore received particular attention from the police. The details of this are an operational matter for the Chief Constable but I am satisfied that everything possible is being done to preserve the peace in the area.

I understand that meetings have taken place between residents, police representatives, local councillors and appropriate officials to discuss security and that since the recent attacks the police have been in daily contact with the residents.
