HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 c574W
Mr. Haselhurst

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he is taking in the light of recent representations about standards of sport in schools.

Mr. Tracey

Over the past seven months I have met representatives from a number of organisations in the sport and education fields. These meetings have proved useful in identifying particular issues of importance to both interests. There is a need for further discussion, and for this purpose I have agreed with my hon. Friend the Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science that senior officials in our Department will jointly host a seminar in the autumn on the subject of sport in schools. Interested organisations will shortly be invited to send representatives.

Our common aim is to ensure that children receive the full range of benefits that sport can contribute to children's education, and that our schools and governing bodies should work together to that end.
